Sandpipers Class

Welcome to Sandpipers!

Welcome! I am so happy to meet you all and hope that you are looking forward to a brand new year. We have lots of exciting things to look forward to.

A Magical World!

Our topic for the Autumn term is full of magic and mystery. Our class book will be 'Harry Potter and the philosopher's Stone.' We will be using this as a stimulus for lots of our work this term. The children will create spells and potions and they will even design their own owl and wand.

In Literacy, the children will be learning to write letters, descriptions and poems. They will expand their vocabulary by having a 'Word of the week' and they will practise using this in their writing. Over the term, the children will learn how to write different types of sentences and edit and improve their own work by using a variety of adverbial openers. We will also be working really hard on handwriting. They will practise this daily to work towards earning a pen license.

This term in maths, we will be heavily focusing on number. We will look at place value, rounding, ordering, comparing and counting in multiples. The children will also practise their times tables daily. We will do this through chanting and rehearsal. It would be great if the children could practise these at home too.

For information on our wider curriculum areas please look at out curriculum web underneath.

PE: This will be on a Monday.

Woodland: This will be on a Friday.

Homework: This will be given out on a Friday and handed in the following Wednesday.

The children will be given a homework grid. They are expected to complete 6 of the 9 tasks over the term. Then each week they will also receive a task to complete along with reading and spelling practise. This will be stuck into your child's homework book.

Please ensure that your child is practising their tricky words where possible and reading each night for around 15 minutes. I would also like the children to write in their planner once they have read. This can be done by themselves or by the person they read with.
