Rights Respecting Schools

Wheelock Primary aims to be a school where children’s rights are at the heart of our ethos and culture, to improve well-being and to develop every child’s talents and abilities to their full potential. We are very pleased to announce that we have been awarded the second stage of Unicef UK’s Rights Respecting Schools Award (RRSA), Silver: Rights Aware.

We are always striving to create the best possible learning environment for our children at Wheelock.  Achieving this award shows that we are committed to promoting and realising children’s rights and encouraging adults, children and young people to respect the rights of others in school.

We are extremely proud to announce that following our recent accreditation meeting from a UNICEF representative, we are now officially a Silver Rights Respecting School. This award recognises the hard work of our children, teaching team and all members of the Wheelock Primary community who are ensuring that children are both receiving their rights and understand them.

Our assessor was particularly pleased with our children's attitudes to taking action for other children and being able to cite examples from the Convention of Rights of the Child. Children can explain how duty bearers at Wheelock Primary support them and said that 'their school feels like a rights respecting place to be'.

Acheiving this award in such a short period of time, following achieving Bronze status in February 2022, emphasises the commitment Wheelock Primary has to developing their Rights Respecting environment.

Well done everyone! Now to start working towards our gold award!

RRSA Whole-School Events:

This term (spring 2), our focus has been on World Book Day.  Article 17 has been our main right to consider as this right promotes access to information, which may be through books, internet sources or media.

Our Article 12 squad were set the challenge of finding 5 picture books which promote our British Values... they did a great job and we now have many books to share.

In assembly, we have listened to a rage of stories together, which promote and explore values.  Here are our favourites!

During spring term 1, our Article 12 squad designed a competition to create a poster sharing safe behaviours for our newly installed trim trail.  We had many, many fantastic entries, but after much debate, we have chosen our winner: Annie (Hawks)!

Her wonderful poster has been sent off the the sign-writers to be made into a permanent outdoor sign!  Great job Annie :-)

In our class sessions, we considered the 5 British Values (Democracy, Individual Liberty, Rule of Law,Tolerance and Respect) and how our Wheelock Values (Be Kind, Belong and Believe) fit with these.  Children were challenged to recite the values and demonstrate how we promote themin our school.

-Fantastic EYFS and KS1 Nativity productions.

Throughout November, we will be focussing on Article 24, which recognises that all children have the right to the best possible health, water, food and environment.  Members of the Article 12 Squad are looking forward to:

-Visiting the local foodbank to support their work (year 5/6)

-Litter Picking to improve our outdoor environment

14th-18th November is Anti-Bullying Week. Following our participation in the Diana Award Big Assembly on Monday 3rd October, we have lots of fun and engaging activiies planned throughout November.

During October, children at Wheelock Primary learnt about Black History Month.  During this month, the children completed many activities linked to Black History using RRSA resources (found in the weekly articles tab). This national celebration aims to promote and celebrate Black contributions to British society, and to foster an understanding of Black history in general.

The following videos, provides a great start to this work and have been shared with classes in school.

In addition, on Friday 21st October, the children were invited to wear red to support the anti-racism movement 'The Red Card'.  Supporting this day signified solidarity.  Donating a small amount using the QR codes displayed around the school (Eagles, Sandpipes, Kingfishers, Owls windows and the main office) was optional, but would further support the cause.
