Wheelock Curriculum

At Wheelock, we place great importance on a curriculum which develops the whole child. We do this through our four core school values to ensure that academic and personal success go hand in hand.

Our curriculum includes coverage of the National Curriculum and equips children with the knowledge, skills and understanding for life beyond Wheelock. Subject leaders have worked hard to make sure that our curriculum is focused on the development of children’s knowledge and skills across all primary subjects with the aim of ensuring pupils are ready for the next stage of their learning.

The curriculum is complemented by high-quality teaching within the core subjects of reading, writing and maths. While our teaching approach is tailored to the needs of the individual child, we also use a number of published schemes to support our delivery of key skills.

These include: Power Maths, Read to Write, Reading Eggs and Letters and Sounds.

Our curriculum is underpinned by 4 Core Values. These are embedded into the delivery of our curriculum:

  • Challenge
  • Individuality
  • Creativity
  • Community

Our curriculum includes not only the statutory requirements of the National Curriculum, but also a wide range of extra-curricular activities that the school organises in order to enrich the experiences of the children. These include things such as:

  • Residential visits for Years 4 and 6
  • Woodland learning sessions
  • Visits to educational centres such as museums and historical sites
  • Theatre visits
  • A range of sporting clubs and competitions
  • Visits from specialists such as authors and musicians

When children leave our school at the end of Year Six they will be equipped with the full range of knowledge, skills and vocabulary that enables them to become lifelong learners that enjoy their learning and who can work through challenges.
