Rights Respecting Schools at Wheelock Primary
At Wheelock Primary, children's rights are at the heart of everything we do. We are committed to creating a school where every child feels safe, respected, valued and empowered to reach their full potential.
We are extremely proud to have achieved Gold: Rights Respecting School Status from UNICEF UK in May 2026. This is the highest level of recognition in the Rights Respecting Schools Award and reflects our whole-school commitment to embedding the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) throughout school life.
The award recognises the work of our pupils, staff, governors and wider school community in creating a culture where children's rights are learned, lived and respected every day. Through our curriculum, assemblies, pupil leadership opportunities and wider school experiences, children learn about their rights and the responsibilities that come with them. They are encouraged to use their voices to make positive changes within our school, local community and beyond.
During the accreditation process, the assessor praised:
- Children's excellent knowledge and understanding of rights.
- The way rights are embedded across the curriculum and wider school life.
- The strong culture of inclusion and respect.
- The meaningful opportunities children have to influence decision-making.
- The confidence of pupils in taking action to uphold the rights of others.
Our Article 12 Squad plays a key role in leading Rights Respecting work across the school, ensuring that children's views are heard and acted upon.
Although we are delighted to have achieved Gold accreditation, we recognise that being a Rights Respecting School is an ongoing journey. We remain committed to promoting children's rights, equality, dignity and participation in all aspects of school life.
